Communities

The Palm Springs Unified School District is located in the Coachella Valley, which is approximately 110 miles east of Los Angeles and 120 miles northeast of San Diego, in Riverside County, the fastest growing county in California. The District serves the students and families of Cathedral City, Desert Hot Springs, Palm Desert, Palm Springs, Rancho Mirage, and Thousand Palms. In the last ten years, the area's population has increased significantly. Currently, the permanent population of the Coachella Valley is more than 275,000 and continues to grow.

Each year, more than 3.5 million tourists visit the Palm Springs area, staying in the more than 16,200 hotel rooms at 255 hotels and resorts, playing golf at the 115 golf courses, playing tennis on the over 600 tennis courts, eating at one of the 620 restaurants, swimming in the more than 40,000 swimming pools, or attending conventions at the Palm Springs Convention Center.

Tourism remains Palm Springs top industry, followed by agriculture. The region's top crops are table grapes, dates, grapefruit, lemons, and oranges, though virtually everything is grown in the area thanks to the plentiful supply of water diverted from the Colorado River and the area's large underground aquifer.

Shopping opportunities abound, with two major boutique districts, Palm Canyon Drive in Palm Springs and El Paseo in Palm Desert, and four indoor malls: Palm Springs Desert Fashion Plaza, Palm Springs Mall, Westfield Shoppingtown, and Indio Fashion Mall.

Hikers from around the world enjoy the many fine trails in the Coachella Valley and nearby mountains. Bringing fame and record number of visitors to the area for more than 30 years is the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, the world's largest single-span lift. Its two cable cars transport riders from the desert floor to the 8,516 foot mountain station in the Mt. San Jacinto State Park and Wilderness, where there are hiking, equestrian trails, campsites, restaurant, cocktail lounge, picnic area, and gift shop.

Cultural: Palm Springs Desert Museum, Annenberg Theatre, McCallum Theatre (Bob Hope Cultural Center), The Living Desert, Palm Springs Air Museum.

Special Events: National Date Festival, La Quinta Arts Festival, Golf Tournaments (Bob Hope Chrysler Classic, Nabisco Championship, Skins Game, Legends Game), Tennis Tournaments (Newsweek Champions Cup, State Farm Evert Cup), U.S. Polo Open, Nortel Palm Springs International Film Festival.

Recreation Facilities: Over 85 golf courses, Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, Polo Grounds, Natural Hiking Trails, Biking Trails, Water Park, Cross-Country Skiing, Skiing within an hour drive, easy access to Colorado River boating and the Pacific Ocean.

CLIMATE

The beautiful, near-perfect desert climate offers a year-round respite to visitors from around the world. With only 15-20 days of rainfall per year, dry air and low humidity, there is fun in the sun by day and balmy desert evenings to enjoy to the fullest. From fall through late spring, days are warm and nights are cool. Summer days are hotter, but clean, dry air makes the higher temperature feel comfortable.

COST OF LIVING

Cost of living in Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley is substantially lower than the surrounding metropolitan areas of Southern California. Major benefits are derived from cost of housing which is approximately 40% below surrounding counties of Orange, Los Angeles, and San Diego.

HOUSING

Housing within the Coachella Valley is readily available and very reasonable. The variety of options from single family home, condominium, or apartment, provides the individual a wide variety of choices. Rental rates range from $600 per month on up. Home prices range from the low $100,000's to the multi-million dollar estate.
