Cyber Safety Month
Cyber Safety Month
Cyber Safety Month will be held in October. During Cyber Safety month Palm Springs Unified School District (PSUSD) will use Common Sense Media which offers Digital Literacy and Citizenship Curriculum to help educators empower their students and their school communities to be safe, responsible, and savvy as they navigate this fast-paced digital world.
Why do we have a Cyber Safety Month?
The Broadband Data Improvement Act was signed into law by President Bush on October 10, 2008. The law, in general, aims to improve data collection and promote affordable broadband services. Title II of the Act incorporates much of the Protecting Children in the 21st Century Act that was introduced by former Alaska Senator Ted Stevens in 2007, and is cited under this name. The Act includes provisions that creates a public awareness campaign on Internet use and safety as well as develop strategies promoting safe Internet usage by children.
An official summary notification was received via email from Charles E Campbell, the California E-rate Coordinator on 4/30/2012. The summary stipulates that by July 1st, 2012 each E-Rate district have in place Board policy that specifically includes how the district will:
- Monitor the online activities of minors
- Provide for educating minors about:
- inappropriate online behavior, including interacting with other individuals on social networking websites and in chat rooms and
- cyber-bullying awareness and response
